Crocodile Fact

1.    Did you know that there are 23 different species of crocodile that live on this planet? However, Australia is home to just two species – the freshwater crocodile (which is found nowhere else in the world) and also the estuarine crocodile. Despite their names, both of these species can live in fresh or salt water. Other species can be found in the tropics throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas.

2.    Although they have since been replaced by humans, crocodiles were once at the top of the food chain. Of course, we’re talking a long time ago – approximately 100 million years ago – during the Mesozoic Era.

3.    The crocodile jaw is a thing of supreme power and force. Although the muscles in their jaw are quite weak and incredibly sensitive to touch, they have one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. For example, did you know that the saltwater crocodile has a bite nearly three times the forces of a lion or tiger? Impressive, right?

Mosquito

1.    Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on Earth. Mosquitoes transmit dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, yellow fever and the infamous Zika virus. West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness that is carried from infected birds to humans via mosquitoes. People typically develop symptoms between 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

2.    If mosquitoes and humans have anything in common, it’s that they both like beer. People who drink beer have been shown to be more attractive to mosquitoes. The exact reason for this is unclear.

3.    Mosquito eyes are two spheres on both sides of their head which contain hundreds, if not thousands of lenses called ommatidia. Up close, it looks mesh-like. In addition to sight, mosquitoes use both olfactory and thermal cues to find their targets – the triple threat.

4.    There are more than 3,500 species of mosquitoes in the world.
